As world population soars and increases, the challenges of feeding its people become vast with the increasing rate of the population. Without doubt, the food processing industry is positioned to be a vital part of the solution in nation building, feeding nutritious food to over a billion people. It has played a central role in driving improvement in nation’s nutrition with its linkage between farmers and the final consumers in ensuring sustainability and providing the populace with the kind and quality of food they depend on at all time of the year.
Tremendous progress has been achieved in recent years in the field of processing, packaging and distribution of food in their contribution to socio economic development of nations. It has become a growth catalyst in nation’s economy through employment generation. The industry has large employment generation and account for direct employment in factories as influx of labour force is needed in the processing operation to ensure continuous production and sustainability.
Furthermore, food processing operation has contributed to income generation of local farmers since a large share of this industries are located in the rural, semi urban region. This has enhanced a significant multiplier effect on the local economies as the region provide both material and labour force for the industry hence, boosting the local economy through generation of income and its upsurge effect on its economy.
Procurement in food processing operation has made immense contribution to socio economic development of nations. Food processing industries has developed more scientific method for sorting and grading produce which has helped in improving price realization for farmers by reducing intermediaries, thus, lowering price build up.
