Water testing – how important it is now

My interest on water evaluation started on 1996, when one evening I got a call from Dabol Power Plant, which is now under NTPC. IT was Naptha based power plant. The enquiry was to test the naptha content in water.

That was the beginning. That time analytical technology was not so advanced and detects naptha in trace level (migration of naptha in under ground water) was really a challenge and costly affair to get most accurate results. But the first think in my mind came is that why this facility is not available to common man.

Not till 2014, when Thyrocare Technologies invited me to set-up the laboratory for water testing for common man. I was excited.

Now this facility is available to all Indians, anywhere in India as door service. Branded as “Whaters”, this service is available at each door in India – from sample collection to report delivery. What more is that suggestions about water after analysis and guide to make it potable.

Total minimum 33 parameters are vital to evaluate the water and suggest the remedies – 15 physical and chemical, 16 elements and 2 microbiology test. Once tested, I can predict the problem, the source of contamination and can suggest the remedy for this.

Water makes up more than two thirds of human body weight, and without water, we would die in a few days. The human brain is made up of 95% water, blood is 82% and lungs 90%. A mere 2% drop in our body's water supply can trigger signs of dehydration: fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on smaller print, such as a computer screen. (Are you having trouble reading this? Drink up!) Mild dehydration is also one of the most common causes of daytime fatigue. An estimated seventy-five percent of Americans have mild, chronic dehydration. Pretty scary statistic for a developed country where water is readily available through the tap or bottle water.

Water serves as a lubricant

Water serves as a lubricant in digestion and almost all other body processes. The water in our saliva helps facilitate chewing and swallowing, ensuring that food will slide easily down the esophagus. Water also lubricates our joints and cartilages and allows them to (pardon the pun) move more fluidly. When dehydrated, the body rations water away from the joints. Less lubrication equals greater friction and that can cause joint, knee and back pain potentially leading to injuries and arthritis. Even our eyeballs need plenty of lubrication to work well and remain healthy.

Water regulates body temperature

Our bodies can control over-heating through perspiration from sweat glands in the skin and from evaporation which produces a cooling effect. Blood is also routed into areas close to the surface of the skin where it can be cooled and then carried back to the interior of the body. Conversing in a cold environment, the skin maintains proper body temperature by shunting the blood away from the exterior surface thereby conserving heat within the body. The movement of water within our cellular systems also transports vital blood plasma which is 92% made of water. Blood plasma play a critical role in buffering the body’s pH, circulating antibodies from the immune system, and regulating osmotic balance which all helps to maintain proper body temperature.

Water removes harmful toxins from the body

Water helps our bodies remove toxins in many different ways. Water flushes toxins and waste from the body through urination and perspiration. Water helps reduce constipation and aids in bowel movements which ensures that wastes are removed quickly and regularly before they can become poisonous in the body. This waste buildup can occur in the body if dehydration becomes a regular occurrence and this can cause headaches, toxicity and illness.

Drinking enough water will also lessen the burden on the kidneys and liver by flushing out waste products.

Water transports valuable nutrients to the body

Blood is about 92% water and it carries nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. Nutrients from the food we eat are broken down in the digestive system where they become water-soluble, which means they are dissolved in water. Water allows these nutrients to pass through the capillaries within the intestinal walls to the blood and circulatory system where the valuable nutrients and oxygen can be distributed throughout the body to all the cells and organs.

In addition to the daily maintenance of our bodies, water also plays a key role in the prevention of disease. Drinking eight glasses of water daily can decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45%, bladder cancer by 50% and it can potentially even reduce the risk of breast cancer. And those are just a few examples!

 

Don’t wait until someone gets sick……………….

Testing your water is a fairly simple task. Common reasons for testing are listed below:

          Your family members are suffering from diarrhea frequently.

          The type of plumbing in your house and its age - you have brass fixtures, lead pipes, or lead soldered joints in your household.

          Your water has a strange taste or odor.

          Your water is hard and is leaving soap scum on bathroom fixtures.

          You are purchasing a home, and you want to test the efficiency of a current water purifier setup in your kitchen.

          You want to purchase a water treatment setup for your house, but are not sure of what problems exist in your current water supply.

          You want to test the efficiency of an existing water treatment setup.

          There is recurring gastrointestinal distress in your family or visiting guests.

          You are pregnant, or have a child less than six months old living in your household.

          There is septic tank next to your water tank , and it is questionable if the septic tank is set back far enough from your storage tank.

          Your water tank is near to the industrial zone with ETP plant.

          Your society is near to the dumping ground.

          Your drainage system is passing close to your water tank.

          You have noticed an increased amount of turbidity in your water.

          Your property is near a chemical plant, a gas station (either abandoned or not), mining operation, a landfill/dump, dry-cleaners, junkyard, heavily salted roadway, or an oil/gas drilling company.

I always suggest people to test the water before planning for a water purifier, because there are different filtration technologies are available for different problems and should be selected and designed as per requirement. One of the examples is if my water is well balanced on minerals, then why I shall go for a RO system? Just to maintain the social status and will keep my health on stake?

Lots of work is going on to evaluate the water quality in India and to create the awareness among the people. According to geographical area, industrial populations and water storage and distribution process the water quality at end point varies and so it is important to know the quality of water from the tap and then decide the remedy.
